Anytime you’re having work done on your home it’s going to be an intrusive process. Bigger projects will definitely have you feeling put out of using a section of your home. The kitchen can feel especially overwhelming as it’s an area of your home that is used several times throughout the day. When it comes to a kitchen remodel prep, there are several things that you’re going to want to take care of before the remodel crew comes in. Take a look at this guide from our team at Ollendorff Construction for some of our top tips to make sure you’re ready for your remodel.
Set up a temporary kitchen
When you’re getting your kitchen remodeled, it’s likely going to be entirely unusable. This means that you’re not going to have access to your stove, oven, dishwasher, or potentially your microwave. You’ll need to find somewhere in your home that you can set up a microwave and a toaster to cook food. If you have the space available, you can move your refrigerator out to your garage so you don't have to get rid of many of the items you have in there. If not, it might not be a bad idea to buy a mini-fridge so you have somewhere to keep drinks and cold cuts.
Find a different place to eat in your home
It’s not uncommon for the kitchen and dining room to be connected. If this is the case in your home, you’re going to need to find a new place to eat. We recommend setting up your kitchen table somewhere that you have extra space like a living room or an office. If you’re fine with limited space, TV trays provide a viable option for eating on a couch while your remodel is in progress. It’s going to be a strange experience, but it’s only temporary.
Include the cost of eating out into your budget
Eating at home among the mess and clutter of a remodel can be difficult and frustrating, so you’re likely going to want to go out to eat often. While it’s not the best solution to the problem, it’s going to be the easiest. Consider budgeting to eat out two or three nights a week. This won’t necessarily always be the case, but it’s better to over budget than overspend.
Buy paper plates and plastic utensils
You can make mealtime clean up much easier on yourself by buying paper plates and plastic utensils. Remember that you’re not going to have a kitchen sink available and washing dishes in a bathroom sink isn’t a good idea. It’s easier to have dishes and utensils that you can simply throw in the trash when you’re finished rather than trying to wash them.
Pack up your current kitchen
Your entire kitchen will need to be packed up to prepare for your remodel. This means all the drawers, cabinets, and pantry will need to be completely empty. Put plates, pots, pans, and whatever else in boxes or totes so you can easily move them out of the kitchen. Find an alternative place in your home to store them so they’re away from the remodel so they don’t get dirty or ruined.
